Goal-based guide

Enlarged pores, uneven skin texture, and dull skin

Pores are normal openings in the skin. They do not open and close like doors, and no treatment can erase them. Their visible appearance may vary with oil, congestion, or uneven texture. The first step is identifying what contributes to what you see.

Pores do not “open” and “close”

The phrase “closing pores” is commonly used to describe a visible change, but pores do not work like doors. Cleansing, a peel, or a device cannot remove normal follicular openings. A treatment may reduce their visible appearance or address texture, oil, or congestion that makes them stand out; responses vary from person to person.

What may make them look more visible

Oil, congestion, and an uneven surface may increase contrast around a pore. Blackheads, active acne, acne marks, sensitivity, pigmentation, or uneven tone may also coexist. What looks like a large pore in a photograph may involve more than one concern and should be assessed directly.

Before choosing a treatment

It helps to distinguish surface congestion, uneven texture, certain acne marks, dullness, uneven tone, or irritation. Active inflammation, infection, marked sensitivity, recent procedures, medications, and a history of healing or pigmentation may change or postpone a plan.

How the options differ

Cleansing and Hydrafacial work primarily at the surface; a peel provides controlled chemical exfoliation; microneedling creates controlled microchannels; IPL uses light for pigmentation, visible redness, and tone. They are not interchangeable, and there is no automatic reason to combine them.

Realistic results

A reasonable goal is a possible improvement in visible appearance or in a contributing concern, not the elimination of pores. The number of sessions, magnitude of change, and duration depend on the starting point, protocol, skin response, and aftercare.

Useful questions for an assessment

Ask which main concern is being observed, which exact protocol is proposed, what it may and may not change, which recovery and risks matter for your skin, and how progress will be evaluated. These questions help separate realistic expectations from broad promises.

Compare the options

Treatment selector

These options address different contributing concerns. The comparison does not mean that every option is suitable, that they should be combined, or that they can eliminate pores.

Deep facial cleansingCompare this option when congestion or extraction is the main concern. The extent of extraction is adapted to sensitivity and does not imply a permanent change in pore size.→
HydrafacialThis combines cleansing, extraction, and hydration in an adapted protocol. It is surface care, not a method for closing pores.→
Lunch PeelA superficial chemical exfoliation may be considered for texture or dullness depending on the skin and routine. Product, intensity, and recovery should be individualized.→
MicroneedlingThis may be considered for the appearance of visible pores, uneven texture, and certain marks after an assessment. Changes are gradual, and it does not erase pores or scars.→
IPLThis may be relevant when perceived dullness comes with pigmentation, visible redness, or uneven tone. IPL is not presented as a pore-closing treatment.→
